Local Youth projects
Giving Back To the Community
Rotary believes in helping and developing the next generation of leaders. Our local youth project are designed to help younger leaders build leadership skills, expand education and learn the value of service. Our focus is Youth at Risk and many of our projects, present and past, are a reflection of that dedication to the youth of the North Shore as well as internationally.
Helping The Next Generation of Leaders
Donating as an individual can result in a very satisfying feeling and can offer tax advantages. Along with personal donations, many companies also choose to donate to non-profit organizations, which, not only makes a difference, it can also be good for your company’s public relations and engagement of employees.
How do we normally donate our youth project funds? Below are some examples of past and current charities.
- Student Scholarships – RCLG provides post secondary, Academic and Vocational Scholarships for students who have overcome significant physical, emotional, mental and/or social challenges and still qualify to graduate from Grade 12.
- Boys and Girls Club – RCLG is a vital support to the Boys & Girls Club of North Vancouver. We donate needed equipment and provide hands-on support for cleaning, organizing, painting and repairs to the Boys & Girls Clubhouse. We also volunteer at their annual family Christmas Pancake Breakfast and fund camperships to the Boys & Girls Club summer camp. Examples of International Projects.
- ONE TO ONE Literacy’s mission is to help children develop literacy skills for life. ONE TO ONE is a unique children’s literacy program which provides one-to-one tutoring to elementary school-aged children within the school setting. Their approach is to initiate early, critical intervention into the lives of at-risk children, and our trained volunteer tutors work with these struggling students in collaboration with classroom and resource teachers.
- Rotary Youth Exchange – is Rotary exchange program for students in secondary school. Rotary sponsors young people around the globe to experience new cultures. RCLG sponsors both inbound and outbound students.
- Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) – is a leadership experience organized by Rotary where young adults develop leadership skills while having fun and making connections.

Rebuilding Communities
ShelterBox
Rotary has supported ShelterBox from the start, when a local club championed the simple idea to package up essential shelter items in our now-iconic ShelterBoxes. As ShelterBox grew, so did Rotary support, and we are now international project partners in disaster relief. This partnership has helped us to become who we are today. Our global network of ShelterBox affiliates, which provides all-around assistance, evolved from Rotary relationships.
Rotarians and Rotary groups all over the world help ShelterBox in a variety of ways. In addition to tireless fundraising, they provide invaluable assistance during our responses. With more than 33,000 clubs worldwide, Rotarians are able to give us first-hand knowledge of many of the countries in which we respond, logistical and operational assistance and vital links into communities.
Rebuilding Communities
Each disaster is different, and so is every community. We don’t believe that one size fits all, so we make considered assessments to provide the exact support that gives people the hope and the power to transform their own lives.
The aid we supply comes in the form of ShelterBoxes and ShelterKits. Our sturdy green ShelterBoxes contain family-sized tents specially designed to withstand the elements and provide people with temporary shelter until they are able to start the process of rebuilding a home.

Supporting At Risk Youth
Backpack Buddies
Since the beginning of the pandemic, there has been a 74% increase in food insecurity for families across the country. While food insecurity has long been prevalent in BC, the circumstances created by COVID-19 have only exacerbated the crisis.
Hunger lives in your neighbourhood. It could be right next door.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Join with Rotary Club Lions Gate you can help turn hunger into hope for a child in your community, year-round.
British Columbia has one of the highest child poverty rates in Canada with 20% of children living below the poverty line.
The ever increasing cost of rent, household expenses and childcare, has created an affordability crisis for families in our community. Basic needs like food, shelter and warmth are now in direct competition with one another. Families living in poverty are often forced to make brutal trade-offs like foregoing dinners for a week to pay the rent.
Over 163,000 children experience food insecurity. Food banks help, but many families still depend on school breakfast, lunch and snack programs to meet their children’s baseline nutritional needs. But, these programs only exist during the week.
Families in our community are struggling to keep food on the table over the weekend.
Here’s a video on the last cheque presentation made to the local Backpack Buddies of North Vancouver.
